DIGITAL MEMORY OUTPUT: SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES

Oral history studies are conducted using digital tools to record individuals' life stories, experiences, and memories. This enables us to perceive historical events or societal changes from the perspectives of individuals. Within the scope of digital memory studies, this digital platform we have created aims to digitize cultural heritage and transmit it to future generations.

Ageism is a prevalent and serious issue faced by elderly individuals. Our society's aging population encompasses experiences, knowledge, and stories that come with age. However, the biases and misconceptions we hold about aging can lead us to ignore or undervalue these significant resources.

The purpose of the "Digital Memory" output of the project is to establish a platform for recording, preserving, and sharing the experiences of elderly individuals regarding aging and ageism. This project aims to accomplish the following objectives:

  • Honoring and Evaluating the Experiences of Elderly Individuals: We aspire to enhance our understanding and appreciation of the aging process by sharing the rich experiences and stories of elderly individuals. These experiences constitute an essential part of our cultural heritage:
  • Creating Awareness Against Ageism: Ageism is often an invisible and silent issue. Our project aims to raise awareness against ageism and reduce negative attitudes. By sharing the experiences and perspectives of elderly individuals, we aim to highlight the harms of age discrimination.
  • Contributing to Social Change: We hope that this project will serve as a catalyst for societal change and progress. The stories of elderly individuals offer an opportunity for younger members of society to better comprehend and respect the aging process.
  • Preserving Cultural Memory: The stories shared by elderly individuals are a part of a society's cultural memory. We believe that this project fulfills the duty of preserving this significant heritage by digitizing it.
  • Strengthening Human Connections: Sharing the stories of elderly individuals and facilitating communication with younger generations can strengthen understanding and bonds across different age groups. Our project aims to encourage positive interactions among people.
  • With these objectives, we aim to shed light on the experiences of elderly individuals, combat ageism, and contribute to a more inclusive and empathetic society through the "Digital Memory" output of our project.
The films below have been prepared from interviews in which elderly individuals shared their experiences of aging and exposure to ageism. They have been published with their consent.
